Phone signal boosters work by increasing the strength of an existing signal, no matter how weak it is initially. There are three basic components to the system. The first is the external antenna. This will be attached to the outside of your property in a location where it receives the greatest signal. Quality packages will come with a signal strength monitor that will help you to locate the perfect position.

Your cell reception will go from this antenna to a signal amplifier. This will increase the power of the captured signal. They range in gain from 20dB to high-powered commercial models of up to 100dB. The high-powered models are seen as unnecessary for home use. It is currently recommended that home-use phone signal boosters should have an amplifier offering a boost between 30dB and 60dB.

After the signal has been increased in the amplification unit, it will be transmitted to an internal antenna. It is the job of the internal antenna to evenly distribute the signal around the area. The monopole antenna is considered to be the most effective at even and equal distribution, although this antenna is not yet standardized.

When using phone signal boosters, you will see an increase in your cell phone's battery life. This is because the signal has a shorter distance to travel, requiring less effort from your phone. This shorter distance is also responsible for a decrease in emitted radiation from your phone. The potential negative health effects from cellular telephones have yet to be fully discovered, partly because this is still a new technology. So any reduction in the possibly negative health issues is a very welcome change.
